When the Anki Vector robot was built, one of the key features was the ability of the robot to emotionally interact with humans. To build this feature, Vector designers used the services of Amazon Lex (the same service that is the back end of the Amazon Alexa device). Amazon Lex provides an API which can respond to speech snippets and respond in the manner of a chat bot. Amazon Lex helped Vector understand the user’s intent (e.g. How is the weather today?), or answer questions (What is the distance between San Francisco and New York?). While the Vector robot focused on the emotional intelligence aspect, Amazon Lex provided the behind the scenes technical know-how.
